A compound sentence describes two or more simple sentences joined together to make one sentence (just like a chemical compound has two or more elements combined together). A coordinating conjunction is one way to actually join the two sentences.
Seven words function as coordinating conjunctions: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. Students often remember them by calling them fanboys words.

2. Check that what is inside the box is correct.
3. Check to make sure you have a complete sentence on either side of the box.
4. Add or remove words to make the sentence into a coordinating conjunction sentence.
5. If the sentence is correct, but a smiley face next to it.
The hawk circled above the field but it didn’t see the rabbit sitting motionless below.
Because a president needs to be intelligent and honest, so voters should scrutinize candidates carefully.
My car needs an oil change, therefore I thought I would stop at the garage on the way home.
She was supposed to finish mowing the lawn, but she didn't.
