Conjunctive Adverbs
Instruction

A compound sentence describes two or more simple sentences joined together to make one sentence (just like a chemical compound has two or more elements combined together). A coordinating conjunction is one way to actually join the two sentences.

Conjunctive adverbs are typically longer words used to create a stronger connection between two ideas. The words are generally used to show the following relationships

Contrast (like 'but')
on the other hand
nevertheless
however
Cause and Effect (like 'so')
therefore
consequently
as a result
Addition (like 'and')
similarly
moreover
in addition
Time Markers
in the meantime
finally
meanwhile

Instruction

Sometimes a conjunctive adverb is used as an interjection. In other words, it's not connecting anything. It's just a word stuck into the middle of a sentence. In this case, the word just has commas on either side to show that it's additional, unnecessary information.

Sentence: Soon we may have to ration the supply of fresh water.

If we insert an adverb into the middle of this sentence, we put commas on either side.

Soon, however, we may have to ration the supply of fresh water.

Soon we may have to, moreover, ration the supply of fresh water.

Soon, unfortunately, we may have to ration the supply of fresh water.

If the adverb is up front, you simply but a comma after it.

However, soon we may have to ration the supply of fresh water.
